Thomas Cole: founder of the Hudson River School
May 8th, 2008 . by adminThomas Cole (1801-1848), though considered to be the founder of America’s first art movement, the Hudson River School, was actually born in England. His family emigrated to the States, however (Ohio) when he was a boy. After not having much success painting portraits, he began to try his hand at landscapes. After being inspired by the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley region of New York, he found a subject that would make him famous. He painted many of his works at Cedar Grove,his studio in Catskill, New York. In addition to his notable contributions to the hudson river school, Cole also painted some famous allegorical works, such as The Course of Empire.
