Effects of Injection Molding Training on Industry Labor Needs

January 31st, 2008 . by admin

One of the side effects of widespread injection molding training on the overall pool in the plastics industry has been a gradual reduction in the overall number of workers required for a given number of units of capital equipment. Unfortunately, that particular statistic involves the displacement of a certain number of employees from the industry and that is always a painful disruption for those being displaced. Training is not the only disruptor. Advances in technology have played an even larger role. That process will continue in all industries.

Looking just at the effects of injection molding training in the plastics industry, we see a cause and effect process that runs a veery logical parth. As a worker becomes more knowledgable and skilled, his/her capabilities increase. These increased capabilities allow that worker to handle more primary processing machines. It is not at all unusual to have one technician running 3 or more extrusion lines, for example. common for one technician to be responsible for 4 injection molding machines, for example. More highly trained employees also produces better quality products. This decreases the manpower requirements in the quality control department. Lastly, better trained employees tend to make fewer of the kind of mistakes that cause equipment breakdown . This reduces the need for maintenance personnel.

Upgrades in knowledge and skills are always good overall for any industry. However it is also important to note that the effects on individual employees is not always positive in the short-term.
