Fruit antioxidants and detoxing

April 29th, 2008 . by admin

It is hard to believe but one of the ways to help prevent certain cancers relies on the compounds found in a number of plants that are known to have antioxidant properties.

In plants these are called phytonutrients and are able to work together with our body’s own nutrients to fight disease. Research into these fantastic compounds continues with over nine hundred compounds discovered already; with these discoveries (and more to come), scientists believe the face of healthcare is changing, hopefully forever. There has been a whole host of discoveries made into the properties of these phytonutrients; the anti-aging power of blueberries, the joint pain relieving properties of cherries and a whole host of powerful properties in pomegranates are just a few examples. All of which are also a great addition to a detox die, especially when learning how to detox.

Blueberries are one of the top quality fruits containing plenty of antioxidants while maintaining lower sugar content then most other fruits. Currently the most efficient and pleasurable way to get the benefits of these fruits is by drinking their juice; regular consumption can help our circulation and increase our ability to combat illness. The other properties of antioxidants include the ability to fight disease as well. The chance of heart disease can be reduced by eating apples which also contain these nutrients.

The likes of many citrus fruits also have health benefits associated with the phytochemicals they contain. Tart cherries for instance have a number of properties which work together to help people who have arthritis, gout and fibromyalgia. Most of us have already heard about the benefits that certain minerals and vitamins like B, c and E provide which have now become widely used in products. A large group of common berries also contain specialized antioxidants called Phytoalexins (resveratrol); these have anti-viral and anti-fungal properties that can be of benefit to people.

These amazing compounds seem to benefit the elderly with many properties that help reduce conditions found in aging like Alzheimer’s, heart disease, blood pressure and stoke. Nutrients contained in tomatoes have also been recognized to reduce the incidents of heart disease and help ward of certain cancers. Using tomato puree (which is the concentrated form of tomatoes) as the base for your chili utilizes the antioxidants without the bulk of a whole tomato. Nature has also blessed the watermelon with phytonutrients; in fact the most important discovered to date! The health benefits of plants are still in the early stages but why wait to appreciate the benefits this whole range of fruits can bring.
